چکیده
BACKGROUND Small cell carcinoma of the esophagus is a rare and rapidly lethal disease. The mean survival for patients with advanced disease is 5.3 months, and only 10% live longer than one year. CASE REPORT We report a very unusual case in which a patient diagnosed with advanced disease is still alive 96 months after being treated by surgery-alone. This patient is a 61-year-old woman who was referred to our hospital with the chief complaints of dysphagia and vomiting. Endoscopy revealed a huge type-3 tumor on the abdominal esophagus invading the gastric cardia. Histopathology established the diagnosis of small cell carcinoma; computed tomography did not detect metastatic cells in the lymph nodes or other distant sites. We therefore performed radical resection, involving a lower esophagectomy, total gastrectomy, and splenectomy with regional lymph node dissection. The initial diagnosis of small cell carcinoma was confirmed, and classified as type-3 (13.8×7.5 cm), T3N1M0, stage III with invasion to the adventitia (T3) and lymph node metastases along the lesser curvature of the stomach (N1). Postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy using tegafur, gimestat, and otastat was discontinued due to poor tolerance, and the patient developed severe anorexia. The patient remains alive at the time of writing eight years and four months post-surgery, with no evidence of tumor. CONCLUSION To our knowledge, this is the longest survival reported for a case of advanced small cell carcinoma of the esophagus treated by surgery-alone.

Introduction: Primary small cell carcinoma of theesophagus (PSCEC) associated with paraneoplastic sweating syndrome is a rare disease characterized with rapid growth rate, metastasis at the time of diagnosis, and poor prognosis. The lung is the most common site for small cell carcinoma but this malignancy includes 0.1% to 1% of all gastrointestinal and 0.8% to 2.7% of esophageal malignancies. ...
متن کاملThe Five Years Survival after Surgery of Primary Tracheal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
Unlike the primary tracheal tumors, squamous cell carcinoma of trachea is common, especially in smokers. This type of tumor has a low rate of survival and it is diagnosed too late on account of late presentation of its signs. The treatment of choice is surgical removal followed by adjuvant radiotherapy; Primary radiotherapy is the appropriate treatment in inoperable cases. In this study, we pre...
متن کاملA long-term survival case after surgical resection of skeletal muscle metastasis following esophagectomy for squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus
Cases of skeletal muscle metastasis of esophageal carcinoma are very rare, with few reports of long-term survival. We report a case of long-term survival after surgical resection of skeletal muscle metastasis. A 56-year-old man with advanced esophageal cancer and early gastric cancer underwent thoracoscopic esophagectomy, 2-field lymph node dissection, partial gastrectomy and gastric tube recon...
متن کاملSeven-Year Survival of a Patient with Primary Tracheal Squamous Cell Carcinoma after Surgery: A Case Report
The primary tracheal cancers are very rare, and squamous cell carcinoma is its most common form, especially in smokers. Due to the late presentation of symptoms, these tumors are usually diagnosed too late, and thus, they have poor survival. The gold standard protocol for these cancers is surgical excision and adjuvant radiotherapy. Primary radiotherapy is applied for the advanced and inoperabl...
